Mahdi Shahriari, Babak Abdolkarimi, Fazl Saleh and Pooria Salajeghe from the
Department of Pediatrics, Hematology-Oncology Branch, Amir Oncology Hospital, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran have just published a case report entitled : Metronomic Maintenance Therapy in Refractory Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia with Monosomy 7 in the Iranian Journal of Blood & Cancer.
They report about a 13 year old patients with a primary refractory acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) with monosomy 7; who was treated with oral low-dose chemotherapy after standard systemic chemotherapy. The metronomic regimen with
Thioguanin 40 mg/m2 for 21 days,
Prednisolone 40 mg/m2 for 5 days,
oral Etoposide 50 mg/m2/day for 21 days
ATRA 45mg/m2/day
Valproic acid 2.5-5 mg/kg/day for the first 14 days of month followed by 7 days of rest.
The treatment is stil ongoing and lead to disease stabilisation for over a year.
