High-level Meeting on Non-communicable Diseases
Background
The General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/65/238 decided that the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases shall be held on 19 and 20 September 2011 in New York and that the high-level meeting shall address the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases worldwide, with a particular focus on developmental and other challenges and social and economic impacts, particularly for developing countries.
General Assembly resolution A/RES/65/238 further requests the President of the General Assembly to organize, no later than June 2011 an informal interactive hearing with non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, the private sector and academia to provide an input to the preparatory process for the high-level meeting. This informal interactive hearing will take place on 16 June, as noted by the President of the General Assembly in his letter of 11 March. H.E. Raymond Wolfe, Permanent Representative of Jamaica and H.E. Sylvie Lucas, Permanent Representative of Luxembourg have been appointed by the President of the General Assembly to act as co-facilitators and will hold timely, open, transparent and inclusive consultations with all Member States, with a view to adopting a concise and action-oriented outcome document.
